Another component of Task 4 is the use of a jet test device to evaluate the erodibilty of soils in close proximity to scour critical bridges (Note picture below). The jet test device for in-situ and lab testing was constructed and tested both in the field and in the lab. Data was collected from this test along with soil density in order to draw comparisons that aid in predicting scour. Several laboratory experiments have also been conducted with controlled soil samples in order to generate a procedure to replicate the field conditions. Along with the testing, background research was conducted to inform the team on selecting soil criteria that governs the rate of scour that will take place in a given cohesive soil.
