This course introduces students to the world of Motion Design using professional compositing software. Instruction will include the fundamentals of Adobe After Effects, creating text and shape animations, as well as exploring 3D and assorted visual effects. Students will experience a hands-on approach, using best practices in software setup and editing techniques. Throughout the course, students will plan and create a variety of animated compositions that reflect standard industry practices.

Participant Benefits

Students will learn the principles of animation, how to import and organize a variety of files, as well as the fundamentals of color theory and typography. While most work will be completed in After Effects, students will learn how to import Photoshop and Illustrator files to use in their compositions, as well as Dynamic Linking to pair After Effects with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Duration: 15 Weeks

Curriculum

Each session is three hours long and offered once per week.

Introduction to Motion Graphics

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • What are “Motion Graphics”?
  • Principles of Animation
  • Motion Graphic terminology

Introduction to After Effects

Students begin to explore the After Effects interface. They will be introduced to many of the tools, palettes, menu selections, and techniques we will be using in class. Students will be given an opportunity to “play” with the various groups of tools as they are introduced.

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Exploring the workspace
  • Importing Media and Organizing Projects
  • Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Customizing Keyframes using the Graph Editor

Color

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Introduction to Color Theory
  • Adobe’s Color Wheel
  • Introduction to Effects using Lumetri Color
  • Understanding Color Scopes
  • Color Correction vs. Color Grading

Effects, Modes, and Mattes

  • How to apply Effects to your layers
  • Effect Hierarchy
  • How to use Adjustment Layers
  • How Blend Modes affect your Footage
  • How to use Track Mattes

Shapes

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to create Shape Layers using the Shape Tool and the Pen Tool
  • How to use Shapes as a Transition
  • Animating Shapes on a Path

Text

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Typography Terminology
  • Anatomy of Type
  • Text Animators
  • Where to Find Fonts
  • Converting Text to Shapes

Using Other Adobe Programs in After Effects

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Dynamic Linking
  • How to importing Photoshop Files in After Effects
  • How to import Illustrator Files in After Effects
  • How to add After Effects compositions to a Premiere Pro project

Green Screen + Rotoscoping

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to use Chroma Key to remove Green from a Video Clip
  • Using the Rotobrush Tool to Cut an Object out of a Video Clip

Cleaning Up Footage

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to use Warp Stabilizer to smooth out shaky footage
  • Use the Content-Aware Fill Tool to remove unwanted objects from a scene

Kinetic Typography, pt. 1

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to use Audio files in After Effects
  • How to create Markers
  • How to use Null Objects
  • Converting Photoshop Text to Editable Text

Kinetic Typography, pt. 2

Copyrights, Permissions, and Licensing

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Intellectual Property Rights
  • Types of Licenses
  • Obtaining Releases

Text Tracking, 3D Text, Cameras

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to Track your text in a scene
  • How to create 3D Text
  • Using Cameras and Lights to create a 3D scene

Final Project Day 1

Using what they have learned throughout the course, students begin will have two days to plan and complete their final project: A social media campaign for a local business, complete with videos for every social media platform.
