Presidential Colloquium

A200: Dr. Joongsub Kim, Professor, College of Architecture and Design

joon.jpgJoongsub Kim’s work centers on “engaged scholarship.” Deeply rooted in community engagement and applied research, his scholarship enriches architecture through teaching, research, and service, and advancing the national conversation on urban challenges, social justice, community identity, and service values in architecture. His work has been featured in such publications as the Journal of Urban Design, Architectural Record, and Urban Design International.

As director of LTU’s Detroit Studio, Joon and his students focus on disadvantaged communities, working with “small heroes” and grassroots organizations. He has collaborated with many neighborhoods over the last 16 years, receiving the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s National New Faculty Teaching Award and its 2006–7 National Collaborative Practice Award citation. He has also won national grants from several agencies, including the Graham Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Adaptive Environments Center, Boston. His work was included in the book From the Studio to the Street, published by the American Association for Higher Education.

Joon revived the dormant American Institute of Architects (AIA) Detroit Urban Priorities Committee. He also organized “Detroit by Design 2011,” composed of four symposia and exhibits focused on the “shrinking city” phenomena. He has served on the AIA National Committee on Regional and Urban Design since 2014. Joon received the AIA Michigan Chapter President’s Award in 2012 and the Detroit Chapter Charles Blessing Award in 2015 for his “outstanding contributions to the advancement of the built environment.”

As an expert in engaged scholarship, he was an invited referee for the International Insight Grant Application, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada in 2016. At LTU Joon is the only two-time recipient of the Mary E. and Richard E. Marburger Champion for Institutional Excellence and Preeminence Award, in 2008 and 2015.
