*Students must have Adobe Photoshop, October 2022 release (version 24.0) and later and a computer that can run this software.

This course introduces students to the field of digital imaging and photographic editing using Adobe Photoshop. Instruction will focus on developing strong software and digital imaging skills plus reinforcement of design and creative skills. Students will be led through a series of progressively challenging assignments. The class will progressively increase the student's skills from basic application knowledge to advanced digital image techniques. The assignments will cover digital imagery applicable for both print and screen usage.

Participant Benefits

Curriculum

Each session is approximately three hours long and offered once per week.

Intro to Course and Photoshop Software

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Course syllabus and schedule
  • Photoshop settings, workspace and workflow
  • Introduction to selecting and modifying pixels

Using and Managing Layers

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Selection refinement
  • Using the Layers panel
  • Layer masks, adjustments, and grouping

Creating Composites

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Combining elements of several images into one
  • Non-destructively adjusting individual layers in a composite image
  • Modifying opacity and blending modes of layers

Understanding File Types and Color Modes

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Different file types and their qualities and purposes
  • Different color modes and their qualities and purposes

Creating and Optimizing Images for the Web

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Using correct settings when images are intended to be viewed on a digital screen
  • Using and modifying pixel dimensions
  • Optimizing files to be the smallest file size and quickest load time on the web, while maintaining optimal quality

Creating Animations

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to create both timeline and frame animations
  • Exporting animations into the correct file formats

Creating Images for Print

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Using correct settings when images are intended to be printed
  • Using correct image resolution for print quality

Working with Vector Components

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Add and manipulate text using typographic settings
  • Working with and editing shapes
  • Creating paths using the Pen tool

Healing, Restoration, and Colorizing of Old Images

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • How to use the healing tools, both destructively and non-destructively
  • Using the Clone Stamp tool in restoration
  • Content-aware healing

More Restoration Tools

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Tonal adjustments and removing color casts
  • Adjusting color levels, and white and black balances
  • Removing dust and scratches

Working in Design Industry

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Identify purpose and audience for preparing images
  • Determine type of copyright, permissions, and licensing required for using content
  • Using and creating automated tasks

Design Techniques

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Creating and using vanishing points
  • Warping techniques and options
  • Design and communicate using proper elements and principles of design

Digital Painting

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Paint brush selection, settings, and creation
  • Additional Paint brush tools: Color Replacement, Mixer Brush, History Brush, and Art History Brush

Review for Final Exam

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

  • Terminology, definitions, and file formats related to digital images
  • Design process, proper workflow
  • Copyright rules and protections
