Lawrence Technological University will stage a “Memorial to Hope and Peace” at noon Thursday, Oct. 5 on the university’s Southfield campus.
University officials said the memorial is in response to the recent shootings in Las Vegas, Nev., and natural disasters in Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas, and Mexico, all of which have affected the LTU community.
LTU President Virinder Moudgil noted that an LTU student had a family member killed in Las Vegas, and that the university has several students from Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and Mexico. The memorial, he said, “is a rally call for reflection and action in what unites us. The United States of America has always been a beacon for hope and prosperity. There is no better time to reaffirm this than now.”
Those attending the event will receive a white ribbon, symbolizing peace.
LTU Dean of Students Kevin Finn will serve as moderator of the event. The program will include the recitation of Emily Dickinson’s poem “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” by Ana Magana, a senior engineering student from Mexico City; remarks from Moudgil; the recitation of W.S. Erwin’s poem “Thanks” by Paul Jaussen, assistant professor of humanities, social sciences, and communication; and a moment of silent reflection.
The event will close with the singing of “America The Beautiful.”
