LTU women's basketball team stays at .500


Freshman forward Hali Butler had 19 rebounds and 11 points in the victory against Marygrove College.

The Lawrence Technological University women’s basketball team won its second game in row by defeating Marygrove College, 62-42, in the Mustangs’ home opener Nov. 28. The win improved the Lady Blue Devils’ Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference record to 2-1 and their overall record to 3-2.

On Dec. 1, the Lady Blue Devils returned to a .500 record with a loss on the road to Indiana Institute of Technology, 71-59. (For the latest news on LTU’s sports teams, go to

Junior forward Jill Carland’s jump shot put LTU on the board first in the opening minute. From there the Lady Blue Devils and the Mustangs played a closely matched game with LTU taking a 26-22 lead seconds before the halftime buzzer.

LTU took control of the game early in the second half by scoring 13 unanswered points. The Lady Blue Devils continued to keep the Mustangs’ offense in check with 25 rebounds as LTU cruised to a 20-point victory.

Four Lady Blue Devils scored in double digits led by Carland with 15 points. Freshman forward Hali Butler and junior forward Jackie Hood each had 11 points, and freshman guard Allison Bicknell had 10 points. Butler dominated the boards with 19 rebounds. As a team LTU made 53.3 percent of its field-goal attempts.

The next home game will be on Dec. 8 against Davenport University. The action starts at 1 p.m. with the men’s game scheduled to follow at 3 p.m.
