Jawad named an ASME Fellow

Professor Badih Jawad, chair of LTU’s A. Leon Linton Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

In conferring the honor on Jawad, the ASME Board of Governors noted that he has earned an outstanding reputation for his leadership and devotion to academic achievement and education, both at the university level and in his community. He has received numerous teaching awards and honors.

Jawad developed master’s and doctorate programs in mechanical engineering at Lawrence Tech. He has advised more than a hundred undergraduate students and has graduated several doctoral students.

Jawad earned his PhD from Wayne State University in 1988 and joined the LTU faculty in 1996 after teaching at several local universities and working as a research and product development engineer for Chrysler Corp. He created LTU’s master’s degree in mechanical engineering, of which he is currently the director, and led the launch of the doctoral degree in mechanical engineering.

Jawad has served as a faculty adviser to the Formula SAE and Supermileage car teams. In 2002, under his guidance, the LTU Formula SAE team won the very first Road & Track trophy for the fastest car in the competition. He is the adviser of the Lawrence Tech student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and co-adviser of Lawrence Tech’s SAE International student chapter. He has led numerous research projects at LTU.

Jawad was named a 2010-11 SAE Fellow, which is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International.

His extensive community service includes more than 11 years as chairman of the school board of the Muslim American Youth Academy at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. Under his leadership, the school has achieved full accreditation.
