U.S. Sen. Carl Levin and LTU President Virinder Moudgil.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) was awarded Lawrence Technological University’s first Global Citizen Award during the Aug. 24 convocation ceremonies to welcome new students and their families at the start of the new academic year.

Levin was the keynote speaker for the convocation, and his speech also served as the conclusion to LTU’s Global Village Project, which helps LTU students prepare to be global citizens with awareness and knowledge of cultural and social similarities and differences among people from around the world and here in the United States.

In his introduction, LTU President Virinder Moudgil noted that Levin has gained a well-earned reputation as a powerful voice in the United State Senate for equality and justice, and as a fighter for economic fairness.

After serving 36 years in the U.S. Senate, Levin is stepping down when his term ends in January 2015. He has played an influential role in U.S. foreign affairs as a member of the Armed Services Committee since 1979. He has been the committee’s chairman since 2007.

In 2006, LTU gave Levin an honorary degree, and Moudgil read from the citiation: “Your enduring leadership in civil rights is helping to forge a diverse America that is ever more tolerant, more understanding, and more compassionate. Such achievements demonstrate not only a seriousness of purpose but indeed a profound respect for our institutions of government and their hallowed traditions.”

Moudgil also quoted from a letter he received from U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, a Republican who served with Levin in the Senate for 12 years: “Senator Levin represents the absolute best qualities of citizenship and leadership. He is a man of honor and decency who has devoted his life to helping make the world a better place for all people.”
