'Battle of the Badges' athletic events at LTU kick off sports fundraising campaign
Dozens of first responders and military personnel will visit Lawrence Technological University Friday, March 23, for the preliminary round of “2018 Midwest Battle of the Badges,” a sports competition sponsored by First Responders for Fitness and the Detroit Pistons.
There will be charity basketball games and a tug-of-war tournament from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at LTU’s Ridler Field House.
First Responders for Fitness (FR4F) is a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes health and wellness via educational programs, events, and competition for first responders and the communities they have sworn to serve.
The first responders competing in this event include federal, state, and municipal public safety, military, and law enforcement agencies. Other partners in the event include Belfor Property Restoration and Kid Rock Made in Detroit Restaurant.
The 2018 Midwest Battle of the Badges Charity Basketball & Tug of War Championships are first responders’ competitions that include both basketball and tug of war divisions. As a component of the Detroit Pistons’ First Responders Night, presented by Belfor, the Pistons will battle the Chicago Bulls after the MBOTB Championship matches on Saturday, March 24. For each ticket purchased, the Pistons will donate $5 to benefit FR4F community programs, while Belfor donates tickets and limited edition Detroit Pistons MBOTB t-shirts to first responder competitors.
LTU officials say the events on campus Friday are part of a new Community Impact Campaign, which includes building a new community sports complex at the corner of 10 Mile Road and Northwestern Highway. Donors to the campaign will support the construction of the multi-sports complex so that Lawrence Tech can expand its collegiate and intermural sports offerings, and provide area K-12 students with a college campus experience at LTU sports camps.
The preliminaries of the Battle of the Badges events on Friday, March 23 are free and open to the public.
The championship basketball game will be held Saturday, March 24 at 11:30 a.m. Little Caesars Arena (LCA), 2645 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Those attending must present a valid game ticket to the Saturday, March 24 Detroit Pistons – Chicago Bulls game to enter. There will be a Friends and Family reception for first responders and military personnel at 4 p.m. at the Kid Rock Made in Detroit Restaurant inside LCA, and special recognition for Battle of the Badges participants before the Pistons-Bulls game, which starts at 7 p.m.
