The Community Outreach Committee of the Staff Senate at Lawrence Technological University collected gifts and donations for children in disadvantaged families as part of an annual holiday campaign staged by the Southfield Goodfellows.
Every holiday season Goodfellows chapters around Metro Detroit raise money by selling newspapers on the street for one day, including at Lawrence Tech. During December the Goodfellows provide food certificates to seniors and families, clothing certificates for children, and gifts for children whose families might otherwise not be able to celebrate Christmas.
“With the addition of the donated food and toys we received, we are able to assist 1,355 people with an amazing amount of food, clothing, and gifts for the children,” said Joan Boufford, director of the Southfield Goodfellows’ newspaper distribution fund-raiser.
LTU’s Staff Senate has been supporting this cause for almost 20 years, and this year was allocated gift tags for 75 children. When toys are not donated for one of the tags, the Staff Senate provides a $25 gift certificate.
This year the gifts were collected at the annual Giving Tree celebration on Dec. 4 in the atrium of the Buell Management building.
