Lawrence Tech president, alumna honored by Engineering Society of Detroit
SOUTHFIELD—Lawrence Technological University’s president and one of its recent alumni received honors June 23 at the annual awards dinner of the Engineering Society of Detroit.
LTU President Tarek M. Sobh, PE, PhD, was inducted into the ESD College of Fellows. And Katrin Bosch, PE, project engineer at Ruby + Associates Inc., was named one of ESD's Young Engineers of the Year.
ESD’s website says its Fellows “are members of unusual distinction, conferred by invitation of the Board of Directors for outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience in their professions as evidenced by accomplishments in the following major areas: technical achievement; professional achievement; ESD service and leadership; and professional society service and leadership—as indicated by honors and awards, publications and patents, academic service and leadership, and community service and leadership.”
Sobh is the eighth president of Lawrence Technological University and assumed office Jan. 1, 2022 after serving for 15 months as LTU’s provost and chief academic officer. Previously, he was interim provost, university executive vice president for research and economic development, and founding dean of the College of Engineering, Business and Education at the University of Bridgeport. He received a Bachelor of Science in engineering with honors in computer science and automatic control from Alexandria University in Egypt, and Master of Science and PhD degrees in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his academic career as a research assistant professor of computer science at the University of Utah.
A prolific scholar, Sobh has authored more than 250 refereed journal and conference papers and book chapters, in addition to 27 books. He serves or has served on the editorial boards of 18 journals, and has served on the program committees of over 300 international conferences and workshops in the robotics, automation, sensing, computing, systems, control, online engineering and engineering education areas. Sobh has presented more than 150 keynote speeches, invited talks and lectures, colloquia and seminars at research meetings, university departments, research centers, and companies. His background is in the fields of robotics, computer science and engineering, control theory, automation, manufacturing, AI, computer vision and signal processing.
Bosch joined Bingham Farms-based Ruby immediately after her graduation from LTU in 2013 with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in architecture and civil engineering. She has since worked on a variety of projects in many of Ruby's services and project types, including Detroit's Little Caesars Arena, the Columbus Crew MLS stadium, the new Wayne County Criminal Justice Center, a Florida amusement park project, and a submarine hull manufacturing plant in Rhode Island. She is active in Ruby's Culture of Quality group and works at the firm’s Grand Rapids office.
