The curtain rises and the announcer introduces you to the gorgeous girls standing in gowns: “Here are your contestants for Miss Lawrence Tech 2014.”
And your next Miss. Lawrence Tech 2014 is … Shelby McPherson! When the Miss Lawrence Tech scholarship pageant was held on Saturday, Feb. 8, the level of competition was high with seven girls taking the stage.
The other six contestants were: Victoria Ridella, Kimberly Klieber, Meredith Harper, Mashia Kellum, Angela Pasciolla, and Aubreigh Sabbota. Each contestant was judged on an onstage question, bathing suit, talent, and evening gown.
The Miss LTU pageant started six years ago to empower women and help their communities through their personal platforms. The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship and a chance to compete in the Miss Michigan pageant.
Each girl was welcomed on stage by the energy of the crowd with astounding applause. Q&A started out the competition after the opening dance number, and each girl answered with ease. After that was lifestyle and fitness, where the girls showed off their physiques in bikinis.
The crowd’s favorite part was where the girls get to show their talents. The talents ranged from trumpet playing to singing and dancing. Last, but not least, the girls were shining on stage with their formal wear.
This year’s winner was sophomore Shelby McPherson. She’s a student in architecture and construction management. She also works in the University’s Advancement office and is part of Delta Tau Sigma. Her talent of playing the trumpet wowed the judges. Her personal platform was Girls Inc., which empowers girls through their programs.
