Phillips named staff member of the month

Release Date: October 8, 2013

Cathy Phillips

Cathy Phillips, head of technical services in the Lawrence Tech Library, has been selected as the Staff Member of the Month for September by the Staff Recognition Committee of the Lawrence Tech Staff Senate.

She was nominated by Associate Professor Daniel Faoro of the Department of Architecture. “Mrs. Philips is an exemplary librarian and always is pleased to assist faculty and is prompt, correct, and efficient in her work efforts. I have worked at multiple universities, and her dedication to assist others is rare,” he said.

Phillips came to the library in 1998 and was soon named head of technical services, the part of the library operations that goes on behind the scenes.

“Many librarians in the technical services are not strong people-persons, but Cathy is.  She welcomes everyone who comes in or calls for help and gives them a first-class experience,” said Library Director Gary Cocozzoli. “She provides reference assistance as well as deals with technical issues of the library. Her patience and incisiveness is practically legendary among the staff. … Cathy volunteers to take on challenges that others would shy away from, getting it done and getting it done right.  She guides library staff to work together effectively and is also a superb trainer.”

Phillips has led the library staff in two complete migrations of the library operating system in 2005 and 2012, daunting tasks that she took on with confidence and patience, according to Cocozzoli.

She has promoted more cooperation among campus departments, such as the Office of Career Services and the Academic Achievement Center, and has served on numerous campus committees over the years.

Phillips has been instrumental in involving the University in patent information and has helped rejuvenate the Oakland County Inventors Society by organizing their monthly meetings at LTU.

She also has a background in historical and genealogical research.
