Lawrence Tech researcher tackles sports-related injuries

LTU Assistant Professor Eric Meyer believes that the best way to deal with sports-related injuries is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Meyer is studying both ankle and knee injuries for athletes with the aid of a recently developed three-dimensional computer model.

LTU students are aiding the research through directed-study projects.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in the knee have become common among athletes and the elderly. There are many unknown factors leading to ACL injuries, and prevention strategies have had only limited success so far. High ankle sprains are another area of research for Meyer.

Meyer is working on a model to simulate dynamic experiments that investigate various ligament-sprain injury mechanisms in cadaver knees.

If the causes of these injuries are better understood, biomechanical engineers will be able to develop better designs for athletic shoes or for the artificial surfaces used for athletic contests.
