The inaugural World Conference on Integrated STEaM Education through Robotics, known as WISER 2014, was held May 16 at Lawrence Technological University in conjunction with the Robofest World Championships that were held the following day.

The goals of this first WISER conference were to:
• Bring together advocates to share their experiences and knowledge in robotics education.
• Exchange and discuss ideas in robotics education for the effective coordination of education in science technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with art, in order to create a STEaM learning environment.
• Research how to advance robotics education and educational robotics technologies for every student through the STEaM learning paradigm.

Dean Hsiao-Ping Moore of LTU’s College of Arts and Sciences gave opening remarks. Mike Dobbyn, who was a program chair, gave the plenary talk to start the conference. A teacher in the Hamtramck schools, Dobbyn received a master’s degree in educational technology from LTU in 2010.

Nine presentations were made. The abstracts and presentation materials can be found on the web at www.robofest.net/index.php/current-competitions/wiser

WISER is another brain child of Professor CJ Chung of LTU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He started Robofest 15 years ago, and WISER will become part of Robofest programming.

“With this WISER education research component, Robofest becomes a truly integrated learning environment for robotics education,” Chung said.
