LTU welcomes new freshman class

Release Date: September 3, 2013

housing-1.jpgOn Saturday, Aug. 24, approximately 200 eager freshmen packed up their belongings and arrived at both North and South Housing for the Office of University Housing’s third annual Welcome Weekend.  More than 80 percent of Housing freshmen moved into South Housing, home of the Freshmen Year Experience.

On Saturday, residents and their families enjoyed picnic-styled barbecue.  This ritual is a celebratory meal with residents and their parents.  Residents and parents also got the opportunity to meet some of the Housing staff, including their floor RA.  Once the barbecue had ended, the parents were instructed to say their goodbyes to their sons and daughters.  The residents went to the newly remodeled S100 where they received prizes and watched skits performed by the Resident Assistants about getting involved on campus and campus safety.  On Saturday evening, residents participated in another Housing ritual, RA Round Up.  This giant version of hide and seek got residents to see various aspects of campus while working to retrieve a grand prize of college essentials.  The residents enjoyed delectable ice cream and s’mores in the Atrium.

Residents were greeted to weekend cartoons and cereal (along with assorted breakfast treats) on Sunday morning.  With the residents’ stomachs full, they began to work off some of the delicious treats by participating in games in the Fieldhouse.  Games, like dodge ball and volleyball, were co-facilitated by upperclassmen volunteers.  Since the residents worked up a sweat, they migrated to cool down by participating in the slip and slide in North Housing.  While at North Housing, residents were able to participate in giant games of Mafia.  The weekend’s final activity allowed residents to bring their blankets and lawn chairs to watch Olympus Has Fallen outside, projected on the front of South Housing.

The Welcome Weekend was a successful kick-start to welcoming the largest incoming class, our newest members of the Blue Devil family, to Lawrence Tech.
