LTU MCS Student discovers an anomaly in the Hubble sequence

The Hubble sequence, named after Edwin Hubble, is the basic morphological scheme by which galaxies are classified. LTU student Levi Dojcsak used computer simulation of tens of thousands of galaxies taken from several different widely used galaxy catalogs, and showed that many of the galaxies that seem to be elliptical actually have some features typical to spiral galaxies. The new discovery and the computational methods that he used provide a new way to study galaxy morphology. His work was reviewed by experts in the field, and was accepted for publication in the reputable journal “New Astronomy”.
