Excellence in Honors Instruction Award

Release Date: August 24, 2017

The Lawrence Tech Honors Program aims to engage some of our best and brightest students by providing rigorous academic challenges, as well as exclusive social and professional development opportunities.  The Honors curriculum is the foundation of this program and depends on the outstanding contributions of faculty members.  Dr. Shannon Timmons, Director of the Honors Program, has created a new award to recognize the hard work of faculty members from all Colleges who engage Honors students in dedicated Honors sections, cohort sections, and through individual arrangements with students.  Dr. Timmons is pleased to announce that the inaugural Excellence in Honors Instruction Award was recently presented to Dr. Patrick Nelson, Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, at the College of Arts and Sciences faculty retreat.  Dr. Nelson was nominated for his work in instructing Honors Differential Equations during the spring 2017 semester.  Congratulations, Dr. Nelson, and thank you to all the instructors who teach in the Honors Program.

Comments from the nominating student:

"I have never enjoyed a math class as much as this one with Dr. Nelson. He has a sincere aptitude for judging the needs of students, as well as understanding what students struggle with. He is a teacher that makes sure every student in the room knows and understands what he is talking about. He balances assignments and exams accurately so a student knows exactly what to expect, and is able to succeed. He makes the material interesting and applicable for everyone in the room. I am excited to use what he taught me in my future career--in fact I have already used it in the workplace. 10/10 would recommend."
