Lisa Toenniges

Owner and CEO of Innovative Learning Group Inc. (ILG) in Royal Oak. ILG provides custom learning and performance support services to Fortune 1000 companies. Toenniges has more than 20 years of experience in the performance improvement industry and has consulted with numerous national and international companies about learning strategies and solutions. The company expanded its headquarters in 2010 as it continues to add clients and staff. Toenniges was named one of the 2010 Top 10 Michigan Business Women and Rainmaker of the Year by the National Association of Women Business Owners of Greater Detroit. In 2010, ILG won the Central Indiana American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) Best in Class Award −Managing the Learning Function −for her work in creating a resource planning tool for client Trinity Health. Toenniges also was named an Entrepreneur of Distinction by Corp! magazine in 2009. In recognition of her company's commitment to Michigan, ILG received Corp! magazine's 2010 Michigan Economic Bright Spots Award and 2009 Best of Michigan Business Award. In 2007, ILG received a Small Business Award from Crain's Detroit Business. Prior to starting ILG in 2004, Toenniges spent 10 years at the former Triad Performance Technologies, leaving as director of consulting services. Toenniges gained agency experience at Ross Roy Communications as the project manager for wholesale and retail training projects for Chrysler. Prior to Ross Roy, she spent six years at General Motors, where she ultimately assumed responsibility for training district sales managers. Toenniges wrote How to Manage a Large-Scale Learning Initiative: Tools and Templates Based on 20 Years of Award-Winning Programs, published by Brandon Hall. She also is co-author of Managing Training Projects, an "Infoline" report for ASTD. Toenniges serves as a director and treasurer of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI). A past president of the ISPI Michigan chapter, she chaired the 2010 ISPI International conference. She also is a Certified Performance Technologist endorsed by ISPI. Toenniges received her bachelor's degree in music education from Michigan State University and a master's in instructional technology from Wayne State University.

WHERE MY FIELD/INDUSTRY IS HEADED: “We're in the custom training and learning field mostly for large corporations. Where we see it trending is to mobile. Learning just when and just where you need to learn, and in just the right way, can very much be done with a mobile device.”


FAVORITE PLACE: “On the lake−any lake, any water. I love to look at it but like to be in it or on it, as well.”

FAVORITE HOBBIES: “Working out and water activities. And all types of fitness−anything to keep moving.”

FAVORITE FOOD: “I'm more or less a carb junkie. I'm fortunate since I work out quite a bit.”

MY HIDDEN TALENT: “Before I got into the corporate world, I was a band director and music major. I spent my childhood and college years playing the piano and saxophone.”
