SUMMARY: Supports and maintains Robotics Automation Lab, Industry 4.0 Lab, MRIE labs related to Artificial Intelligence, and other labs as needed. Provides technical support as requested by faculty and/or students engaged in robotics, automation, and/or artificial intelligence research. This position will also support in the implementation of curriculum and related activities as requested by faculty. The Project Engineer will be engaged and a proactive participant in research projects and department activities. The position is “hands-on” requiring personal motivation, initiative and leadership. The Project Engineer must be professional and able to competently represent the department when requested. 

JOB DUTIES: Support the Robotics Automation Lab and Industry 4.0 Lab in the Taubman Complex and other MRIE labs related to Artificial Intelligence. Support maintaining and upgrading academic instructional laboratory systems related to robotics, automation, and/or artificial intelligence under close supervision of faculty. Will include support for robotic arms, PLCs, misc. industrial automation equipment, laboratory control system and artificial intelligence equipment, laboratory data acquisition, relevant software/computer systems as well as establishing written procedures for maintenance, calibration, and use of such laboratory equipment under supervision of faculty. Provide direct technical support to faculty on funded research projects in the areas of robotics, automation, and/or artificial intelligence under general supervision of project principal investigator. May be required to temporarily supervise some aspects of funded research projects under general supervision of project principal investigator. Support and contribute towards the writing of reports, technical papers and presentations, as required under general supervision of project principal investigator. Establish, monitor, carry out and document a maintenance and repair system for specified equipment within the Robotics Automation Lab, Industry 4.0 Lab, and artificial intelligence labs. The ability to engage in professional development for new technologies as they arrive is critical. Maintain a flexible work schedule as required, and also participate in special events and projects as requested by the MRIE Chair.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelors of engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Robotics or related field from an ABET accredited school required. Master’s degree in Mechatronics or Robotics engineering, or related field desired but not required. Industrial or academic research laboratory experience strongly desired.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess significant familiarity with a laboratory environment and testing systems, and have a high proficiency in creating and setting up process instrumentation and data acquisition systems. Familiarity with PLCs, industrial automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sensor fusion is desired. Knowledge of Allen-Bradley software, Siemens PLC software, National Instruments platforms, dSPACE platforms, ROS, MATLAB and Simulink, TensorFlow is desired. Strong electronics and electrical systems skills and the ability to design both digital and analog circuitry, for test stand and laboratory bench-top research testing systems is desired. Ability to fabricate custom jigs and fixtures made of common industrial metals and other materials using typical machine shop material removal and processing equipment is critical. A working knowledge of TIG and/or MIG welding is desired. A certification in fork lift/high-low operation is desired but not required for this position.
