Due to health concerns, upholstered furniture is strictly prohibited in South Hall and Donley Hall. Residents of Reuss Hall and East Hall may bring small sofas and chairs with proof of purchase within three months of bringing the item to campus. Proof of purchase must be submitted to the building Residence Hall Coordinator. This includes, but is not limited to: mattresses, couches, love seats, futons, chairs, ottomans, and flip-style seats.

The following is a non-exclusive list of prohibited items:

  • Additional refrigerators, dishwashers, heaters or air conditioners (mini fridges allowed in Reuss and East up to 4.3 cubic feet)
  • Kitchen Appliances
    • Convection ovens
    • Cook tops
    • Crock pots
    • George Forman style grills
    • Hot plates
    • Mug warmers
    • Pressure cookers
    • Rice cookers
    • Toaster ovens
    • Any item with an exposed heating element
  • Candles/Candle warmers/wax melters/incense
  • Electric Blankets
  • Extension cords – unless it is a power strip
  • Fireworks
  • Flammable or Hazardous Materials
  • Fog machines
  • Grills
  • Halogen lamps
  • Hover boards
  • Lava Lamps
  • Live Christmas Trees
  • Non-LED Decorative Lights
  • Neon signs
  • Personal Lofts
  • Space heaters
  • Sun lamps
  • Waterbeds
  • Weapons
  • Other items which are deemed “dangerous” by the Office of University Housing


Any prohibited item(s) found in residents’ apartment will be confiscated. It is at the discretion of the Office of University Housing if these items will be returned to you. These are subject to the Student Code of Conduct.
