Abro was born and grew up in Baghdad, Iraq; his family emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1960s.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Baghdad University, a master’s degree from the United Nations institute in the Middle East, a master’s degree in Britain and a PhD in Belgium. His education helped him to learn four languages: Arabic, English, French and Chaldean.

Abro has taught in Iraq, Jordan and was also a visiting lecturer in Kuwait and Morocco. He assumed different positions such as faculty, regional consultant, chair of department and acting dean.

Before joining LTU, he was the Math Program Director of Focus: HOPE where he worked with the curriculum committee of the Greenfield Coalition. This committee designed a complete paradigm in manufacturing engineering education. Courses were developed and delivered at Focus: HOPE by three university partners.

Abro arrived at Lawrence Tech as an adjunct faculty member in 1997, then became a full-time faculty member in 2000.

He is the director of the master’s program in Engineering Technology, teaches courses for doctorate students and is a member of several Doctorate Committees in the College of Engineering.

Abro serves as director of the University Assessment Committee and the vice chair of the Engineering Faculty Council.

Winner of 2012 Mary E. and Richard E. Marburger Faculty Member of the Year Award at Lawrence Technological University.

His hobbies include playing racquetball and watching movies, with a special interest in classical western and action films.
