Dr. Joongsub Kim


Professor + Director, Master of Urban Design Program

Joongsub Kim, PhD, AIA, AICP, professor at Lawrence Technological University, directs its Detroit Studio (an off-campus, community-based design and outreach facility) and Master of Urban Design program. The mission of the Detroit Studio is educational: to provide students with an enriched educational experience through community-based architectural, urban design, and community development projects and to offer accessible and useful programs and information to the public, design professionals, municipal officials, and the business community. He revived the dormant AIA Detroit Urban Priorities Committee and chaired it from 2010 to 2014. Currently, he serves on the AIA National Committee on Regional and Urban Design. He was invited to the AIA National Research Summit 2015 to advise the AIA on its national policy on promoting research in practice through collaboration between the academy and professionals. He brought the 2015 Structures for Inclusion international conference, a leading advocacy conference of socially responsible design, to Detroit and co-chaired it. Dr. Kim, a graduate of MIT and the University of Michigan, focuses on public interest design and has received numerous honors and grants, including an ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award, a Boston Society of Architects National Research Grant, an ACSA Collaborative Practice Award Citation, a Graham Foundation Advanced Studies Grant, an NCARB Integration of Practice and Education National Grant, an AIA Michigan President’s Award, and an AIA Detroit Charles Blessing Award.

He has published journal articles and book chapters on service learning, architectural pedagogy, design review, new urbanisms, sustainable urban design, sustainable community revitalization, and environment psychology. His articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Urban Design International, Journal of Urban Design, Places, Environment & Behavior, Open House International, and Architectural Research Centers Consortium Journal. Also, his work has been mentioned in design and professional magazines, including Architectural Record and Architect (the national magazine of AIA).
