Dean joined the faculty in 1983, after five years at Emory University and five years with the Ethyl Corporation research laboratories. He received his BA from Carleton College and his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and spent a postdoctoral year at the University of Alberta. His research interests lie in the area of organometallic chemistry, particularly the synthesis and structural chemistry of metal complexes with unusual sulfur ligands. At Lawrence Tech, he teaches general, analytical, and inorganic chemistry, as well as courses in the Masters of Science Education program. He also serves as the Director of Assessment.

Outside the University, Dr. Dean enjoys bicycling, skiing and music. He currently plays bassoon with the Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra, as well as local chamber music ensembles.
