Madden began teaching at Lawrence Tech in 1998 as an adjunct, while serving as a course developer for Focus Hope. He joined the Lawrence Tech faculty full time in 2000 as department chair, serving from 2000 to 2006. He later assumed positions as Director of the LTU Honors Program and as Director of Undergraduate Science Programs.

Prior to joining Lawrence Tech, he served on the faculties of Dartmouth College, Fordham University, the University of Pennsylvania and Wayne State University, teaching and doing research in departments of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science. He has held Visiting Scholar positions at Columbia University and the University of Michigan. In 2007, he was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Chicago. From 1985 to 1990 he did polymer research at E.I. Dupont des Nemours and Company and has served as a consultant to Shell Oil, U.K. 

At Lawrence Tech, Dr. Madden has taught courses in general chemistry, physical chemistry and, on rare occasion, physics. His research interests are in physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, polymer chemistry and computer simulation. His primary expertise is in statistical mechanics. During the course of his career, he has published articles on liquids theory, water spectroscopy, polymer theory and simulation and the adsorption of fluids in microporous and nanoporous materials.is primary int

Dr. Madden received his B.A. in chemistry from La Salle College (now University) and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently spent two years as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago.

Since formally retiring in 2018, he has continued to teach scattered courses at Lawrence Tech in the summer and fall terms.  He now spends much of the spring term in Hawaii where he enjoys hiking and volunteering at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
