She also worked one year as a postdoc in the civil engineering department at the University of Michigan, before joining Lawrence Tech.

Her specialization is in construction engineering and management with an emphasis in decision-making analysis in construction, cost benefit analysis, cost schedule performance, risk management, sustainable construction, building energy efficiency, and optimization. During her postdoctoral study, she developed models to identify and measure occupants’ energy use behavior to explore energy reduction potential in buildings. Her dissertation focused on developing an optimization model for maximizing sustainability of housing units based on quality-of-life for the residents, housing energy efficiency and environmental impact, and life-cycle cost. She has various journal and conference paper publications on decision-making analysis, cost benefit performance analysis.

Karatas was also involved in DOT projects in the states of Florida and Illinois. She is a member of ASCE, Chi Epsilon, Society of Women in Engineering, and NAWIC. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in techniques of project planning and control, construction engineering, and cost estimation.
