Using Multi-Tools allows for the creation of multiple module placeholders instead of creating individual module by module. While the Due Date Modifier allows for the editing of assignment, discussion, and quiz due dates all in one area. Watch this brief tutorial, building courses with help of Multi-Tool for a quick overview of the tool.

  • Open Canvas course. From course navigation, select Multi-Tool to open

What if I don’t see it?

    • Go to Settings, Navigation. Locate Multi-Tool
    • Drag up to display in the course navigation area or click 3-dots to enable. Make sure to click Save

  • Under Templates, Page Title type in a name convention (e.g., Modules, Weeks, Chapters)
  • Click +Create Template Page
  • Once created, you will see the new page listed under Existing Templates, click the [Template] page created to open in Edit mode on a new page. In edit mode you will continue process using Design Tools

Adding Institutional Template Page

  • Select Design Tools (rocket)
  • Select Create/Edit Content, Copy Existing Content
  • Under the Institution Template Pages, click the down arrow and select Tab Page or Accordion (tab) Page.

Do NOT edit or fill out anything at this point UNLESS you don’t want certain panels within the template. You can delete unneeded sections (e.g., if you will not have any recordings you can delete the Lectures area by:

  • Click inside the template’s label panel
  • Select Add Advanced Elements, Accordions | Tabs from Design Tools.
  • Click on the red X to the right of the panel name to delete. Close Design Tools

Make sure to click Save when done. Close the module page to return to Multi-Tool to continue!

Populate Number of Modules

Now that you have your template page, need to build the number of “modules” to be used. This allows you to set up the pattern for the modules you create.

  • Select Module Builder
  • From New Module Pattern click the down arrow (Module Prefix) and select the naming convention desired, e.g. Chapters, Modules, Units, etc.
  • Select the # of Modules to be created/added
  • Click Generate Module List – now see listing of the modules to be added
  • Click on Add Modules to course
    (do not close page until completed!)

DONE - Selecting Modules from course navigation displays the individual module created and ready for you to add content

Due Date Modifier

  • On the course navigation menu, click Multi Tool.
  • On the Multi Tool main page, click Due Date Modifer.
  • On the Due Date Modifier page, add or change dates by typing a new date or selecting the date from the pop-up calendar.
  • Click Update button next to the assignment.





Blackout Dates allow you to identify dates that you want to avoid when setting assignment dates. Dates or days of the week specified will not be selectable using the pop-up calendar.

To set Blackout Dates:

  1. On the course navigation menu, click Multi Tool.
  2. On the Multi Tool main page, click Due Date Modifer.
  3. Open the Set Blackout Dates panel.
  4. Use the date picker in the Blackout Dates field to pick specific dates
  5. Modify due, lock or unlock dates and the listed dates will be unselectable.

To set Blackout Days of the week:

  1. On the course navigation menu, click Multi Tool.
  2. On the Multi Tool main page, click Due Date Modifier.
  3. Open the Set Blackout Dates panel.
  4. Check the box next to the Checkout Days you wish to blackout.
  5. Modify due, lock or unlock dates and the selected days will be unselectable.
