Log in to Canvas and access your Canvas course (CRN), LTU’s Default Home Page Template is pre-loaded. If you are in a Demo or Development course, the default Home Page is set as Modules.

The instructions below step you through How to add the LTU Home Page template to a Demo or Development course.

Adding Home Page in Demo or Development Course

  • Click Pages
  • Select +Page and the edit screen appears
  • Name the page _Front Page
  • Launch Design Tools (click on the “rocket ship” top right hand side of page)
  • Select “Create/Edit Content
  • Click “Copy existing content
  • Expand “Institutional templates” and select “Front Page”. Page loads.
  • Click Save & Publish. Page loads
  • Select the three (3) dots to the right of the page and select Use as Front Page

Now set the this Front Page as the Home Page

  • Click Home
  • Select Choose Home Page from the right hand pane
  • Click the button for Pages Front Page _Front Page
  • Click Save

Editing Home Page Template
Note: To edit the Home Page template, you must be in Edit mode and must launch Design Tools

Renaming Title:
Click the text within the box to begin renaming the title; backspace carefully and retype the new title

Replace Image (Option 1)

  • Pre-saved/sized Images (max 350x350): Upload locally saved image(s) into Files (Course Navigation);
  • Click the image you want to replace; select Images tab from the right hand side of the page; and select (click) the image

Replace Image (Option 2)

  • Click the image you want to replace
  • Select Upload/Embed icon on the editing tab
  • Choose an Image from local drive and click Open
  • Select area to crop image as needed, click Crop Image
  • Select Upload and Embed

Updated Template Only (16 week blocks) Remove or Add Text/Image Panel Boxes
From Design Tools select “Add Advanced Elements”. (Don’t see Advanced Elements)

    • Click the Cog wheel to open settings
    • Click on Intermediate
    • Click X to close

Removing Panel Boxes:

  • Select “Accordions | Tabs” under “Add Advanced Elements
  • Each row is a set of four text/image boxes. Click within the row you want to remove
  • Click the Red X to remove one at a time, removing all four will remove the entire row.

Adding Panel Boxes:

  • Select “Add Advanced Elements
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom of the editor and place the cursor in the blank line box
  • Select HTML Snippets
  • Click Institutional Snippets
  • Choose either Additional Image Panel 1 or 2 (image sets are different for each panel)
Linking a Page or a Module to Text/Images
  • Highlight the text and/or image and select from the Links tab on the right hand side of the page
  • Select Pages or Modules
  • Expand the menu and choose the content to link

Click Save (course CRN) or Click Save and Publish (Demo or Development)

Select Add Advanced Elements. Don’t see Add Advanced Elements?

  • Click the Cog wheel to open settings
  • Click on Intermediate
  • Click X to close

LTU Banner Image

The LTU banner image on the new semester's Home Page has been updated to now reflect our University's Mission Statement. We suggest that if you copy or export a previous Canvas course that you update the image on the Home Page. It only takes a few steps as listed below:

  • At the Home Page, click Edit and then click to select the LTU banner image
  • Launch Design Tools (top right side)
  • Select Add Advanced Elements (3rd tab listed) 

Don’t see Add Advanced Elements? - [add link to how to] -

  • Click HTML Snippets
  • Expand Institutional Snippets, select last item "Home Page Image"
  • Image replaced - all other links remain as is
  • Click Save

There is a pre-loaded Syllabus template page that each college viewed and approved for use in Canvas. The template contains tabs that navigate to various sections of the syllabus; such as, University Policies and Academic Integrity. The other tabs allow you to edit and add information pertinent to your specific course.

Insert and Edit Syllabus Template

  • Log into Canvas and select either Syllabus from course navigation or click on the Syllabus tab on the pre-loaded Home page.
  • Select Edit and then click on the “rocket” at the right-hand top to launch Design Tools
  • Once opened, select the option Create/Edit Syllabus Content and then select Copy Existing Content
  • Click the down arrow to the right of Institution Template Pages and select the pre-existing template for your college
  • Once loaded, you can begin to edit/add course information.
  • You can use Design Tools to include a pre-defined template block for ‘faculty contact information’ to the syllabus. This can be accessed through Design Tools

Add Contact Information

    • Click to position the cursor under Instructor
    • Select Design Tools by clicking on the Rocket. Make sure that you see the “Add Advanced Elements
      • If NO, click on the wheel icon (last icon on the Design Tools menu). Click to highlight Intermediate and now you can just click X to close that box
    • Expand Add Advanced Elements, scroll down and expand Teacher & TA Details
    • Select your name to expand the contact information. Change items as need; e.g., replace Teacher with Instructor, verify email, add telephone #, Department and Office Hours. Ensure all are checked
    • Click Insert details at cursor --- it’s now on the page
    • Close the Design Tools (click on X)

Continue adding/updating syllabus information and when finished, make sure to select Update Syllabus.

  • Log in to Canvas
  • Access Canvas Course
  • Select Pages, View all Pages
  • Click +Page to add a new Tabbed Page

New Page

  • Type in new name
  • Launch Design Tools (rocket ship)
  • Select “Create/Edit Content
  • Select “Copy existing content
  • Select Institutional Template and here you can select either the Accordion or Tab Page

Page loads in Edit Mode

  • To edit the text within the tabbed box; highlight the text and begin typing replacement text (or copy/paste existing text)
  • To edit the Tab Headings position cursor within any of the Tab Headings
  • Select Add Advanced Elements. Don’t see Add Advanced Elements?
    • Click the Cog wheel to open settings
    • Click on Intermediate
    • Click X to close

Select Accordion and Tabs to expand and see all the “blocks” available in the template

  • To reposition – click to drag/drop
  • To delete – click on the X to the right of the tab name
  • To rename - click inside the box, highlight text and rename

Adding New Tab or Accordion Panel
From Design Tools (Rocket Ship)

  1. Click Add Advanced Elements
  2. Click on Accordions | Tabs
  3. Click in any of the preexisting blue tab panels
  4. Click +Add Panel

Choose which type you want (Accordion or Tab). Rename Panel Heading to desired title


Changing Tab Panel Color
Click inside the new panel box, from Design Tools (Rocket Ship)


  1. Click Customize the Style
  2. Click Current Element Style
  3. Click Color
  4. Click the grey color box under Background Color
  5. Choose the top first Blue color

Linking to an Assignment Using the Tab Page Template

  1. Highlight the existing text in the text box under the tab you want to place your assignment link, then delete existing text.
  2. With the cursor still in that text box, select Links tab from the right-hand side
  3. Click Assignments
  4. Click the assignment you want to link. The assignment link will now appear in the text box

Adding the video player

  • Select Pages, View All Pages
  • Find desired Page, click Edit
  • Launch Design Tools (Rocket) at the top right
  • Place your cursor in the Rich Content Editor (RCE) where you would like the video
  • Click on Add Advanced Elements from Design Tools

  1. Click the Cog wheel to open settings
  2. Click on Intermediate
  3. Click X to close
  • Select HTML Snippets
  • Click Institutional Snippets dropdown
  • Choose video player embed (Youtube, Panopto)


Adding the unique video
Go to Youtube or Panopto, this depends on which player you embedded, and find the desired video

Highlight the section of text after v= (Youtube) to the end before & and id= (Panopto) to end and copy (Ctrl C for PC or Cmd C for MAC)
Launch Design Tools (Rocket) at the top right

  • Select Customize the Style
  • Click Style iframes
  • Under iFrame 1 locate the # highlight and paste the unique code from the video URL

Done! Your video will appear in the player in the RCE
