Setting Module Prerequisites ensure students complete a ‘module’ before moving to the next ‘module’. Prerequisites can only be set for a module(s) that precede a specific module, therefore, you can only add a prerequisite if you have added at least one prior module.

To set prerequisites for a module

  • Open Modules
  • Edit the module (3 dots to right of Module name) and click under Prerequisites select the module that must be completed
  • Click +Add prerequisite to add additional
  • Select Update Module


If you want students to complete everything in a module(s), with no restrictions as to order of completion (e.g., readings, lectures) - use Requirements. When a “requirement” is complete, a green check mark shows that the item has been complete.

You can add the restriction that students must move through the requirements sequentially or they can complete in any order

To set requirements for a module

  • Open Modules
  • Edit the module (3 dots to right of Module name) and select Requirements options for:
    • Students must complete all of these requirements” then can select the option for “student must move through requirements in sequential order”; or select
    • Student must complete one of these requirements” then select the item and option to “view the item”; “mark as done”; or “contribute to page”.
    • Additional requirements may be added
  • Select Update Module

You can set modules to be locked until a given date. Students will be able to see the module titles and module item names, but they will not be able to access the module items until after the lock date has passed.

Note: For students to view a module after a lock until date, the module must be published in your course.

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Modules link.
  2. Click the three dots.
  3. Select the Edit link


  1. Click the Lock until checkbox.
  2. Use the Calendar to select a date. Click the Calendar icon. In the calendar, click the date the module should unlock. If you want to set a specific time, enter a time in the time field. Click the Done button.
  3. Click the Update Module button.
