Unit Seven

Derivatives of Transcendental Functions

Unit Objective:
Learn to find the derivatives of trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. This unit should take no more than 2 weeks to complete.

*All assignments are in Basic Technical Mathematics With Calculus 7th edition by Allyn J. Washington, 2000.

Method of Evaluation:
The unit test will be a pencil and paper quiz taken at your class site. The test will be administered by the instructor or by a proctor. Please see the course schedule for the exact time and date of the unit test.

Objective One
Be able to find the derivative of expressions involving sines and cosines.

d/dx sin u = cos u du/dx

d/dx cos u = -sin u du/dx

Objective Two
Be able to find the derivative of the other four trigonometric functions.

Objective Three
Be able to use the formulas for the derivatives of Arcsine, Arccosine, and Arctangent.

Objective Four
Be able to find the derivative of logarithmic functions.

Objective Five
Be able to find the derivative of exponential functions.

Objective Six
Be able to apply the above derivative rules.
