Julieta Textile is named after Salonen’s sister in-law. Lace from her mother’s collection of hand-crochet vintage doilies is scaled up to highlight the beauty of the details. The lace references older, handmade craft which is often passed along female lines from one generation to the next. Incorporated into the bold textile pattern, the images of lace are repurposed to merge history and craft with modern interiors. Julieta Textile was designed for Finnish textile brand Vallila Interior in 2012, the year Helsinki was the World Design Capital, and when Salonen was also Finland’s Industrial Designer of the Year.

DESCRIPTION

Offcuts, Reimagined Lamp Sculpture is a modular, functional artwork made from stone and Corian manufacturing remnants that would have otherwise ended up as waste. Stone rings are stacked in different ways to create sculptural effects, and the design originated from playing with the shapes. Salonen explains, “I stacked them together, and love that it looks like sedimentary rock or layers of the earth's core.” The work avoids adhesives or resins that bind everything together, as those methods do not typically support cradle- to- cradle design. What happens when you want to discard a product and everything is fused together? The stone and Corian rings in this design can be separated, and reconfigured to create a different aesthetic, for repair, or to repurpose the material again.
