Master of Interior Design | Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture

The Bachelor of Interior Architecture is an accredited, professional baccalaureate degree. The Master of Interior Design is a post-professional degree program, designed for students already holding a professional, accredited degree. Both degrees provide a studio-centered experience that encourages students to explore the the field of interior design in a manner that is practically grounded, critically framed, and deeply invested in cultural relevancy and technological advancement. In both programs, courses are designed to support each student’s intellectual needs through a highly flexible interdisciplinary platform, diverse faculty expertise, and individualized instruction.

The Bachelor of Interior Architecture is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CiDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), giving you an important advantage when entering the workforce. The Interior Architecture Student Organization (IASO) is active on campus and connects students with both of the major interior design professional organizations: the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA).

Master of Interior Design

Admissions

Students are eligible to apply for the 36-credit-hour Master of Interior Design program if they are graduates of a recognized baccalaureate degree program in interior design and have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0. Applications to the program as a regular student must include the following items:

Regular admission to the Master of Interior Design program requires:

  • 1. An Application for Graduate Admission

  • 2. Official transcripts of all completed college work.

  • 3. A resume that outlines academic and professional experience and extracurricular activities.

  • 4. Three letters of recommendation, including one from a practicing interior designer and two from faculty members employed by a college or university who are familiar with the candidate’s professional promise

  • 5. Three letters of recommendation: one from a practicing interior designer and two from faculty members employed by a college or university who are familiar with the candidate’s professional promise.

  • 5. A comprehensive portfolio demonstrating a range of visualization and design abilities and experience. Work should include creative, academic work and may include professional work with a clear statement of the applicant’s contribution. Portfolios must be submitted electronically in a single pdf format, containing no more than 25 images, and with the total file size not to exceed 15 MB. Send portfolio to: admissions@ltu.edu.

Transfer Students

Students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program in interior design may be accepted into the Master of Interior Design program if they meet all admission requirements. Credit for courses taken in a graduate program will be reviewed for their acceptability as substitutes for required courses in Lawrence Tech’s Master of Interior Design program. A request that such courses be considered must be made at the time of application.

Courses taken to meet undergraduate degree requirements may not be used for graduate credit. Normally, a maximum of six credits for non-core, non-design courses will be allowed for transfer credit. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better must have been achieved. The courses must have been completed within five (5) years of the application for admission. Exceptions to these guidelines require the approval of the chair of Department of Art and Design.

Application Procedures

The deadlines for applications are as follows:

  • March 15 for admission in the summer semester

  • July 15 for admission in the fall semester

  • November 15 for admission in the spring semester

Admission to the Master of Interior Design degree program requires the approval of the Graduate Admissions Committee. Regular admission is available only to students who meet all College of Architecture and Design program requirements.

Conditional Admission

Conditional admission may be granted to students with less than a 3.0 grade point average, whose portfolio and references are not of the highest standard. The conditions of the admission will be clearly stated to the applicant at the time of notification of conditional acceptance into the program. Conditional admission requires the approval of the chair of Department of Art and Design and is established as a result of the formal Graduate Admissions Committee review process. Conditional status requirements must be met with a satisfactory 3.0 grade point average for the student to be able to continue in the graduate program.

Students wishing to enroll in graduate electives during their senior year must consult with the chair of the Department of Art and Design no later than four weeks prior to the scheduled normal registration period. Graduate elective courses taken to meet undergraduate degree requirements may not be used to meet professional degree or graduate program requirements. This option is only available to undergraduate students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
