DESCRIPTION

This work is the product of a collaboration between houm PLLC and Three Squared Inc. The North American housing crisis presents the architect with a formidable challenge, and an immense opportunity. Unfortunately, at present, the architect has little ability to engage either, as the vast majority of North American homes are not designed by architects.

This professional marginalization is not due to a lack of knowledge, as most professionals are well-aware that current methods of housing production are neither efficient nor effective, and that the homes thereby created are economically, environmentally, and socially unsustainable. Nor is it due to a lack of expertise, as architects are well-trained to address these issues. It is because the academic and professional frameworks that support the field are fundamentally counter to those used within large-scale housing production.

To engage the challenges and opportunities presented by this ever-replicating world of vinyl siding and sprawling lawns requires an evolution of practice –- one that trades the inefficient and unsustainable processes currently deployed for more efficient practices and more advanced technologies.

These models and drawings of the first prototype home were realized through this new practice. Leveraging industrial-scale production, digital fabrication and generative design, this home, which will be constructed within the next six months, will be constructed in less time (estimates indicate a 20% savings), for less money ($150/sf vs the industry average of $240/sf) and with a smaller environmental footprint than traditional housing. Once completed, the structure will provide a compelling proof of concept, pointing the way to a smarter way to build, and address our nations housing crisis.

DESCRIPTION

This work is the product of a collaboration between houm PLLC and Three Squared Inc. To establish houm's approach, the design team engaged in five years of research and prototyping. Shown here is one of the more successful initial prototypes. Although not fully developed, this prototype acted as a proof of concept to the design team, validating several critical techniques which are now utilized in the core of all houm works.

DESCRIPTION

This work is the product of a collaboration between houm PLLC and Three Squared Inc. houm leverages generative design techniques in  order to streamline the design process without negatively impacting outputs. By using this tool, houm's designers are able to fully understand external forces and create a grounded dialogue with sunlight, views and other force vectors associated with external ecosystems quickly and effectively. This allows all of houm's designs to be fully contextual, at a fraction of the cost.

This work is the product of a collaboration between houm PLLC and Three Squared Inc. All structures designed by houm feature a smart core that collects all of the most intense programmatic and infrastructural elements into a small footprint. This frees the rest of the structure from the burden of having to support these systems - reducing the home's financial and environmental footprint by over 30%.
