Master of Architecture + Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

Summary / Curriculum

The art of building is a multifaceted endeavor that blends design and technology, human comfort and a concern for sustainability, and durability with delight. The process of building any large structure is complex and the most successful projects rely heavily on a cross-disciplinary, team-oriented approach.

In recognition of the need for individuals with a wide-ranging set of professional skills, Lawrence Technological University offers a dual-degree program leading to both a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Graduates with these degrees enjoy careers in both civil engineering and architecture and will be highly regarded by employers in both fields for the breadth of their knowledge and practical training in both areas. Students completing this dual degree program will have satisfied the educational requirements for licensing in both disciplines.

As the content of the BS Civil Engineering program overlaps considerably with the M. Arch program, the dual degree may be earned with only 46 credits in addition to the total architecture curriculum.

The Architecture Program

The architecture program at LTU seeks to develop graduates committed to an articulate and thoughtful approach to socially relevant design. It supports creative inquiry and critical thinking as the basis for design insight, and clear communication as a design objective. The coursework is designed to provide a foundation for the development of architectural design skills and insights, technical training, social responsibility, environmental awareness, problem-solving abilities, and professional competence.

The program is primarily directed toward the practice of architecture, but it constitutes an excellent, broad-minded education and preparation for work in a range of essential fields in and beyond design, including teaching, research, product development and representation and development, and public service. In Track 1 of the Master of Architecture program, which combines the required undergraduate and graduate coursework, students earn the NAAB-accredited, professional degree required for architectural licensure in the State of Michigan and most other US states and jurisdictions.

The Civil Engineering Program

From roads to bridges and water distribution systems to seawalls, civil engineers build and maintain the infrastructure upon which our economy thrives, which is why civil engineering is one of the top careers for job growth. Guided by professors with international industry expertise, students pursue studies in construction, environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation and water resources engineering. The adjunct faculty, another important component of the department, is comprised of highly respected practitioners from all areas of industry. All faculty members provide instruction that adheres to the university’s main approach to education: Theory and Practice.

The Department of Civil Engineering is home to a range of teaching and research laboratories such as the Center of Innovative Materials Research (CIMR), Structural Test Lab Center (STLC), the Great Lakes Stormwater Management Institute (GLSMI), Lighting-Electrical and Daylighting Lab, Hydraulics/Hydrology Lab, Environmental Lab, Civil Engineering Computer Lab, Geotechnical and and Materials Lab.

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BS Civil Engineering) degree is accredited by ABET. Graduates holding the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering are eligible for professional licensure as civil engineers.
