Southfield, Mich. –   Matthew Vengalil, a tenth-grader at Grosse Pointe North High School, has won the 39^th annual Lawrence Tech High School Mathematics Competition.

More than 50 top mathematics students in southeastern Michigan competed for prizes of U.S. Savings Bonds in one of America’s longest-running high school mathematics competitions.

Lawrence Tech’s Mathematics and Computer Science Department hosted the competition, and   Professor Michael Merscher authored the test that covered high school mathematics up to but not including calculus. No calculators were allowed, so mathematical competence and creativity were required to answer the challenging questions.

The other winners were:

Second Place:Ram Bhaskar, 10^th Grade, International Academy, Bloomfield Hills.

Third Place: Robin He, 10^th Grade, Huron High School, Ann Arbor.

Honorable Mention (listed alphabetically): Randy Jia, 9^th Grade, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills; Mason Liang, 9^th Grade, Troy High School; and Sudharshan Mohanram, 11^th Grade, Novi High School.
