WHAT'S NEW AT THE LIBRARY?
DATABASE UPGRADES: LTU Library has just upgraded two premier databases: Business Source Premier is now Business Source Complete, which adds additional full-text and other new features. Emerald was upgraded to Emerald Management Xtra adding 40 new full-text titles and new abstracts.
NEW REMINDER NOTICES: As of now, there is no need to have an overdue book at LTU. Three days before a book is due, an email reminder will be sent to anyone who has an email address in their library user record. It is easy to renew the book online or by telephone if no one else is waiting to read it.
NEW BOOKS AT LTU: It is easy to see what new books have been recently added to the New Book Shelf at LTU Library. Go to the new "Reader's Page" in the TechCat online catalog. (once in the catalog, it is the second last blue box on the right ) Click on New Books and view the list. If a book looks good, but is checked out, you can place a hold on it and be next in line. If you have a problem placing the hold, contact the library and they can do it for you.
NEW LIBRARY SYSTEM: Lawrence Tech has migrated its online library system a Linux platform. This is significant, since LTU is the first library in the world to go live (November 3, 2005) on the SirsiDynix Unicorn library system in a Linux version. There is also an all new version of the public catalog, WEB2, and that is being customized to meet LTU needs as well. Special thanks to our EDCC partners, Keith Goodchild and David Toth, who have blazed new trails in bringing this system up and whose help will make it easier for other libraries that choose the Linux solution.
SPOTLIGHT ON ENGINEERS: follow this link to the great engineering achievements of the twentieth century with history and timelines. Click on each achievement for more information.
NOT SO GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS: These inventions are absurd, but have actual patents registered in the patent office. The creative mind knows no bounds.
BANNER ID NOW USED TO LOGIN: Starting March 12, 2003, use your 11-character Banner ID to log into MiLE, or to check your library account online ("My Account"). Your PIN is the MMDD of your birth, unless you have changed it within your library account. The Library account is private and completely separate from Banner or Blackboard accounts. Also in effect is an improved method of logging into databases from home or work: use this same 11-character Banner ID; no PIN or password is required.
LEARN A TEST: The new service, LEARN A TEST, is now available for LTU users. When you link to the page, you need to set up a free account with whatever username and password you want to create. Just remember it for the next time you log in. Once in, you can select from a variety tests including GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT in 19 categories. Work on your practice tests, pause, resume later at your convenience, and get feedback on your performance. Give it a try on our library home page, in the middle column.
SAFARI TECH BOOKS ONLINE: 25 books on computer, programming, and software topics are now available from the LTU library home page as well as being included in the library's catalog. These titles are also accessible from off-campus computers for currently registered students, faculty and staff.
OFF-CAMPUS ACCESS TO DATABASES has been added for all students, faculty and staff. To use off-campus, click on the database of interest and a screen will appear. It asks for your BannerId. Type in your BannerID (e.g., AB000001234) when prompted. If you encounter difficulties, contact the library (248-204-3000) immediately.
