What is Formula Zero?
The Formula Zero racing competition, based in Amsterdam, operates with the support of the Alternative Energies Commission of the Fèdèration Internationale de L’Automobile.
The first race season, beginning August 2008, will consist of four events—one of which is tentatively planned for North America. The organizers are using this first phase as a first step toward a full-scale, zeroemission, hydrogen fuel cell Formula Zero race class. The size—and speed—of the vehicles will increase, with the intent of demonstrating the commercial viability of this promising new technology. All the hydrogen used in the race must come from a sustainable, renewable source.
Each university student team is responsible for designing and building the Formula Zero kart to meet performance and safety specifications, securing sponsorships and raising funds for expenses related to the competition, including transporting the vehicle and team members to the races. The hope of the Lawrence Tech Element One team is that its involvement in the 2008-09 competition will create opportunities to further public awareness and industry support of hydrogen fuel-cell technology in the United States, particularly in Detroit—the Motor City..
