We are now offering a minor in Spanish. Besides are regular beginner and intermediate courses, we now have a choice in focus between business in Latin America or Spanish and Latin American art and literature. These new courses have been designed to complement and enrich the international skills that students require to succeed in today’s global economy.

Spanish language and knowledge of the Spanish speaking business world are essential tools to interact with most corporations that have branches and representative offices in countries such as Mexico, Argentina, or Spain.  With 28 million Spanish speakers in the US and 420 million worldwide, global companies are now searching for people with global skills and additional languages, and Spanish is the most requested language.

Exploration of business practices, including customs, etiquette, trade associations, politics, and social issues can represent the difference between a profitable business strategy in the growing Latin American markets and a stagnant business relationship.

Beginner Spanish courses teach students to speak, read, write, and translate social and business Spanish.  There is lots of reading and research from the Internet, in addition to excellent textbooks and workbooks to practice in class and at home.

Advance courses will provide students either with the experience of the wonders of Spanish and Latin American literature that promote an understanding of these cultures (an important tool in today’s economy).  Business in Latin America will provide the necessary knowledge of essential cultural differences such as colloquial expressions, greetings, concepts such as timeframes, historical and economic issues in Latin America, and social customs to help them relate to Spanish speaking countries successfully.  A student with bilingual skills is always a cut above in any area.

Mrs. Monica Stevens has taught Spanish at LTU for 10 years.  She is a native Spanish speaker with living and working experience in Mexico, the UK, and the US, and a BA in Spanish and MSBA in International Business,.
