QUICK FACTS

HISTORY

The School of Architecture was established in 1962, having evolved from the former Architectural Engineering department of the School of Engineering. Earl W. Pellerin directed the architectural program developments from the institution’s founding in 1932 until his retirement in 1974. Karl H. Grimel served as Dean from 1974-1990. Neville Clouten served as Dean from 1990-2002. GlenLeRoy is currently the Dean.

The School of Architecture was named the College of Architecture and Design in 1989, at the same time the institution became Lawrence Technological University. The College of Architecture and Design is continuing to enrich the University’s motto "Theory and Practice" through problem-based learning, reflective practice studios and outreach opportunities to design professionals. Strong support from the College is given to the University in its mission to empower students with the ability to think both critically and creatively; to develop the capacity for making sound judgments on the basis of valid information; and to encourage students to seek active and meaningful participation in the life of their communities.

A Bachelor of Architecture professional degree (NAAB accredited) was offered beginning in 1973. A Master of Architecture professional degree program commenced in the Fall 1993, and the Master of Architecture post-professional degree in 1995. The current Department of Architecture and Design houses the undergraduate and graduate Architecture programs. The professional architecture programs, accredited by NAAB, is the Master of Architecture (M. Arch) program. The Bachelor of Science in Architecture is a four-year pre-professional or non-professional degree.

The original Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture commenced in 1979. The current Department of Art and Design houses three programs, the Bachelor of Interior Architecture, the B.F.A. program in Imaging with concentrations in Digital Arts & Graphic Design, Bachelor of Science in Transportation Design and the Master of Interior Design. The Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree program is accredited by CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The B.F.A. in Imaging is also accredited by NASAD.
