Full Time Faculty

The College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University seeks outstanding candidates for faculty and administrative positions in architecture, art and design, transportation design and imaging.  Lawrence Tech is an independent, NCA accredited, private university founded in 1932 and located in the greater Detroit area. College programs hold accreditations from NAAB, CIDA, and NASAD.  Administrative appointments commence July 2008, and faculty appointments commence August 2008.

Administrative Positions

The College of Architecture and Design seeks innovative, resourceful and experienced academic leaders to fill two full-time tenure-track chair positions.  Responsibilities include overseeing course scheduling, managing the departmental budget, monitoring curriculum and degree programs, as well as initiating and maintaining communications within the College, the community and local or national professional organizations.  The positions combine both administrative and teaching roles.  Ideal candidates should demonstrate distinguished records of nationally or internationally recognized work in practice, research and/or teaching.  Qualified candidates must demonstrate strong academic leadership, including program stewardship and support of faculty and student development; excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain the confidence and respect of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the professional community.  Rank and salary shall be commensurate with experience.

Chair, Department of Architecture

Candidates must possess a terminal degree in architecture and architectural registration or Ph.D. in architecture.

Chair, Department of Art and Design

Candidates must possess a degree and experience in transportation design, product design, or industrial design.

Faculty Positions

Architecture Faculty

Applicants for this tenure-track position should understand design as an integrated  and critical process of the built environment and be willing to engage in collaboration with faculty specializing in the allied teaching areas of urban design, landscape, and building technologies in the integrated architectural design studios. Applicants should demonstrate expertise and research interest in one or more of the following areas: architectural history/theory, historic preservation, digital technology and fabrication, urban design, emerging practice, sustainability, or building and environmental technology, and will teach studio and/or seminar classes pertaining to that area of study. A terminal degree is required. Professional registration or Ph.D is desirable.

Architectural Design and Practice Faculty

his position is a full-time faculty appointment to College Professor or a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position.  Applicants should be versed in professional practice and are expected to coordinate the graduate concentration in Architectural Design and Practice. Teaching roles will be in both the professional graduate program and undergraduate design, as well as in the advisory capacity of intern development and professional development.  Preference given to applicants who demonstrate teaching excellence and a strong theoretical and applied knowledge in architectural design and critical practice with evidence of substantive creative achievement. Candidates must hold a terminal degree in architecture and professional registration.

Architecture Faculty

This position is a full-time faculty appointment at the Senior Lecturer/College Professor level or a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position depending on qualifications. Applicants should demonstrate exceptional design experience and ability with expertise in one or more of the following areas: architectural history/theory, historic preservation, digital technology and fabrication, urban design, emerging practice, sustainability, or building and environmental technology, and will teach studio and/or seminar classes pertaining to that area of study. A terminal Master’s degree is required. Professional registration or Ph.D is desirable.

Program Director in Transportation Design

This is a full time faculty position at the Senior Lecturer/College Professor level or tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor level with an administrative stipend to direct the new undergraduate Transportation Design program in the Department of Art and Design.  This program was developed with industry support and admission is highly competitive. The focus is on designers who have a unique blend of conceptual design, drawing and computer visualization, and knowledge of the engineering.  The program has strong ties to and support from the automotive industry.  Candidates for this position will have a significant influence on the direction of the program and should have significant practice experience in Transportation Design and a terminal degree.

Imaging Faculty

This is a full time faculty position at the Senior Lecturer/College Professor level or tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor level and will include coordination of the NASAD accredited BFA program in Imaging.  The program has concentrations in digital arts and graphic design and the successful candidate will lead development of these two areas as well as work with the other faculty and the Art and Design Chair to create new programs in the department.  Candidates should have significant practice and academic experience in Graphic Design or Digital Arts with a terminal degree.

Applicants for faculty and director positions should submit (1) a letter of application,  (2) curriculum vitae, (3) portfolio of professional design work, (4) a statement of philosophy pertaining to the discipline, (5) teaching goals, research and/or scholarly intentions (tenure-track only), (6) three letters of reference, and (7) qualifications in an area of architecture, imaging, or transportation design.

Candidates for Department Chair positions should send (1) a letter of application, (2) a statement describing their approach to teaching pedagogy, areas of expertise, research/creative efforts, administrative experience and philosophy, (3), curriculum vitae (4) three letters of reference, and (5) a portfolio including teaching, scholarly, and creative efforts.

Adjunct Faculty

Adjunct faculty positions are available in the Architecture Department for the following areas:

Architectural History

Candidates must have the ability to teach survey courses in the History of the Designed Environment, or elective courses such as the History of Detroit Architecture or 20th Century Architecture.  Preferred qualifications are:  A Ph.D or M.A. in Architectural History; D. Arch. with a concentration/major in architectural history.  Acceptable under the right circumstances:  Ph.D or M.A. in Art History, D. Arch., M.Arch. (with significant history coursework).

All potential candidates must have had courses in architectural history (can include teaching assistant experience).  Potential candidates must provide a CV with references and a written description of all architectural history courses taught; those without a degree or major in architectural history must also provide written descriptions of all architectural history courses taken.  Potential candidates may also submit a paper or publication dealing with an area of architectural history.

Environmental Control Systems

Preferred qualifications are: a bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture and demonstrated expertise in the subject are to be taught (course subject areas are listed below).  Additionally, one of the following minimum academic criterions should also be met: a master’s degree (preferably in the subject area) or registration as an architect or professional engineer.  Teaching experience is desired, but not required.  Candidates must provide a CV and references.  Portfolios are not appropriate if the candidate is an engineer.

Environmental Control Systems I (ECS1) subjects include acoustics, electricity and lighting design, with the strongest emphasis on acoustics.

Environmental Control Systems II (ECS2) subjects include HVAC, plumbing and fire protection, with the strongest emphasis on HVAC.

Art and Design Department Courses

There are three programs in the Art and Design department seeking qualified adjunct faculty.

Interior Architecture and Design

The CIDA accredited undergraduate Interior Architecture program is seeking qualified individuals to teach Interior Architecture studios that focus on Retail and Hospitality Design, Office Design, and Health Care Design.  We are also seeking people who can teach the Interior Architecture component of the Integrated Design Studio that occurs during the second semester each year.  A degree in Interior Design or Architecture is required.  Preference is give to people with NCIDQ certification and/or a graduate degree. 

The Master’s in Interior Design is a post professional degree aimed at either people who are changing careers and register in our 4+ program or practicing designers who seek an advanced degree that incorporates current practice with design theory.  We are seeking people who hold at least one graduate degree to teach in this program.

Imaging

The NASAD accredited B.F.A. in imaging program is seeking adjunct faculty with qualifications in teaching 2-D Design, 3-D Design, photography, sculpture, graphic design, digital imaging, web design, video design, and product design.  The Art and Design Department is expanding its program offerings and we encourage people who are interested in developing new courses.  Qualifications include a B.F.A. with an M.F.A. and practice experience in one of the areas preferred.

Transportation Design

We have introduced a new Transportation Design program and also have a graduate certificate in Transportation Design.  We are seeking qualified adjunct faculty to teach courses in these two programs.  Applicants should have a degree in transportation design, industrial design, or product design.  A graduate degree and/or practice experience are preferred.

Graduate Program in Architecture

Adjunct teaching positions are available in Studio and Seminar courses.  The NAAB accredited Master’s in Architecture has four concentrations.  Faculty with expertise in one of these concentrations are encouraged to apply.

  • Sustainable Architecture

Potential candidates should have at least one professional degree in architecture and at least one graduate degree.  Preference is given to those who have architectural registration or a Ph.D.

Online Certificate in Architectural Management

We are currently offering a 15 credit hour certificate in Architectural Management that is delivered entirely online.  We are seeking adjunct faculty to teach online courses.  Qualifications include a professional degree in architecture and management experience with a graduate degree, and/or architectural registration
preferred.
