Online Teaching Certification Course Offered
LTU Online is offering a six-week online course through the Educational Technology Organization of Michigan (ETOM) designed to provide participants with the experience of being an online student while introducing them to the pedagogical and technical issues of online teaching. The ETOM course will be offered in Blackboard and Moodle Oct. 6 through Nov. 14.
Successful participants will be able to set up the design for a general course framework, including an organizational scheme (using Blackboard or Moodle CMS) and course management policies. The course identifies the differences between teaching online vs. teaching on campus (face to face), how online integration can become confusing if pursued without preparation, and how positive online activities should dramatically increase student learning.
LTU Online will cover the $300 tuition for faculty teaching or developing courses for LTU Online only if pre-approved. Faculty members wishing to take this course for other than LTU Online courses must be pre-approved by their department.
Registration has started. For information and to enroll online, go to this (link).

Career Services has new Director
Last week Margaret "Peg" Pierce joined the Lawrence Tech staff as director of the Office of Career Services. She came from the University of Detroit Mercy where she was assistant dean of the Career Education Center.
Pierce has a lot of experience working with internships and co-op educational programs. She wants to develop as many of those opportunities as possible and plans to explore new opportunities with smaller companies.
Jennifer Cunningham and Sherri Kerby are the other full-time members of the OCS staff.
Over the summer Lawrence Tech transitioned for monster.com to careerquest.com as the primary job data base on the OCS website. Lawrence Tech is also connected to the NACElink network used by many large corporations to fill positions around the country.

Popular Science Features Element One Team
The September issue of Popular Science magazine featuring the Element One team is now in newstands and being received by subscribers. The story placement turned out even better than anticipated.
The team's story is the lead "teaser" blurb for the cover feature entitled Generation Next: Radical Ideas from Today's Young Geniuses. The Lawrence Tech report is among the longest in the article, commanding a full page (page 59) and situated in the coveted "right hand" position that guarantees highest readership.
While we might quibble with individual parts of the story, please appreciate that overall, this is a rare and extremely positive national and international recognition of your good work. And it certainly doesn't hurt being cited alongside (among others) MIT, UC, Harvard, and Cornell!
