Video Streaming

What is video streaming?

Video streaming is a technology for receiving and playing audio and/or video files that are recorded in room T221 and then stored on our VITRC server. These video streams are then available "on-demand" using RealPlayer plug-in via the Internet and can be accessed by typing in a specified URL or through a Blackboard course.

It allows faculty and students to view video and/or listen to audio of any class conducted in the Denso Instructional Resource Lab (T221) from the internet anytime, anywhere. Faculty can also record a lecture or teach live and record it at the same time.

VITRC has seen a considerable increase  in the number of faculty who are recording lectures, syllabus explanations, guest speaker presentations, test reviews, and other sessions that allow students to access at their convenience.

Perhaps one of the reasons for this increase is the increase in quality output VITRC has recently been able to obtain.

An important feature of streaming media is that the user can start watching the video or listening to the audio almost as soon as it begins downloading.  In effect, the file is sent to the user in a "stream," and the user experiences it as it arrives.  An obvious advantage with this method is that no waiting is involved.  Another advantage is that no copy is saved to the user's computer, saving disk space and helping to conform to copyright laws.  Minimum technical requirements include a 56K modem and RealPlayer software (included on all LTU laptops.)

In addition, a number of faculty members have asked VITRC to convert their VHS tapes, CD's, digital audio recording, and other media into streaming audio or video. With this conversion, faculty and students can access the media anytime and anyplace, adding not only convenience but also eliminating the need to make copies for distribution.  Please note, however, separate copyright permission must be obtained.

If you need to convert any media to "stream" or if you want to record a student project or any other type of class session, please contact VITRC at (248) 204-3750 or vitrc@ltu.edu
