Development and Implementation of a Physical and Virtual Stormwater Management Trail

Abstract: Lawrence Technological University’s campus master plan (2003) and the opening of a LEED Silver Certified student services center in 2005 provided the opportunity for the campus to commit itself to green design and the use of low impact development (LID) techniques. Concurrently with the Center design and construction, University officials reviewed the existing stormwater system and identified areas for retrofit with innovative stormwater management techniques as part of the institutional master plan.  This provided a roadmap for potential retrofits and measurable improvement in the watershed.  The campus now has three bioretention cells, naturalized detention, two native grow zone/riparian buffer, porous pavement, a vegetated roof, cistern, and bioswale.  Several of these innovative stormwater mangaement techniques have been monitored for performance as part of ongoing research investigations.

A unique aspect is that these techniques are strategically placed in the center of campus to provide for a compact educational experience while addressing current stormwater retrofit needs.  The educational experience is unified through the development of a self-guided walking tour with professional educational signage supported by a virtual component (i.e. interactive a website with videos and additional information accessible through smart phone technology).  As such, the University has become a regional case study for stormwater retrofitting in an urban environment and a living laboratory of innovative stormwater best management techniques for education, outreach, and research.  This assists the University in educating the next generation of professionals, landscape architects, community leaders, and urban planners on issues associated with stormwater as well as possible solutions for managing and treating stormwater in a sustainable manner.

Brownstown Middle School Green Roof Monitoring Project

Abstract: The Brownstown Middle School (BMS) Green Roof Monitoring Project was a collaborative effort between the Wayne County (Michigan) Department of Environment (WCDOE), Lawrence Technological University (LTU) and the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District; all of whom are committed to improving watershed quality through low impact development techniques (LID), monitoring and public education. A Xeroflor Vegetative Mat green roof was installed on the Brownstown Middle School (Brownstown, MI) during the fall of 2010 with vegetation being established in October.  A section of the Xeroflor green roof was identified for monitoring purposes based on ease of access, clear delineation of drainage area and uniform green roof coverage. The instrumentation applied to the green roof test section was also placed on an adjacent traditional asphalt roof which serves as the control installation.  The project successfully established a long-term monitoring station at Brownstown Middle School to enhance sustainability education efforts. Results indicate that the green roof retained approximately 54% of the rainfall received and was very efficient at retaining small storms.  With regards to peak reduction, on average, the green roof is reducing peak discharge by approximately 55% and delayed the centroid of mass by approximately 45 minutes.  This relatively modest reduction in peak discharge and delay is due in part because of the small section that was monitored.  The larger sections of the vegetated roofs would exhibit longer delays. The water quality results for this experiment were mixed in terms of data quality and roof performance. Finally, project members assisted BMS middle school staff on further data collection and how to implement results into the state standard science curriculum.  This broader impact is an important component of the project as the region tries to educate students and the public on the benefits of green roofs to increase their usage on public buildings.

Restoring a Natural Flow Regime in the Clinton River

The 80-mile long Clinton River has its headwaters in rural and urbanizing areas and then flows through heavily urbanized sections of southern Oakland and Macomb counties before eventually draining into Lake St. Clair in southeast Michigan. Although water quality in the Clinton River has improved over the last 30 years, the river faces a number of environmental challenges, including extreme fluctuation of water flow.

Twenty one separate impoundments – or dammed lakes – along the upper reaches of the river interrupt natural flows and block fish movement within the watershed. A majority of the lakes created by the impoundments have a court-authorized water level that is set independently of other lakes in the system and the downstream receiving waters. When lake control structures at the impoundments are adjusted, the result is a sudden, drastic change of water flow in the river. Although regulatory agencies are legally required to make these water level adjustments, the resulting abrupt changes in river flow adversely impact fish and wildlife habitat as well as recreational opportunities.

The project was funded by Michigan Seagrant of National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and resulted in the development of a water balance model that predicts flow depths and discharges for a wide variety of flow control and rainfall scenarios. In addition, the researchers used stakeholder input, a variety of existing data sources, and economic models to assess the causes, consequences and possible solutions for the current flow regime for a healthier more sustainable watershed.

Pontiac Community Gardens Project

Lawrence Tech is part of a grant from the Erb Family Foundation to develop four community gardens in Pontiac, Michigan, that will help increase awareness of environmental issues while producing fruits, vegetables, and flowers for area residents in 2012. Donald Carpenter, associate professor of civil engineering, is heading up the Lawrence Tech effort. Our team, which is comprised mostly of civil engineering majors, will function as the construction project manager as well as offer guidance on the educational materials being prepared. The opportunity because it will help create mentors, tutors, and champions of environmental preservation among local residents while contributing to neighborhood beautification and civic pride. Other participants in the grant include Cranbrook Institute of Science, Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, Pontiac Garden Club, the Greater Pontiac Community Coalition, Pontiac Public Schools, and the Engineering Society of Detroit.

Biodiesel fuel production and testing

Project Description: The project objectives are to understand alternative ways to produce biodiesel and to evaluate the performance and energy content of biodiesel made from common cooling vegetable oils.  Testing is done using an oxygen bomb calorimeter, and diesel electric generators coupled to various power loads. Biodiesel is viewed as a possible alternative to fossil fuels.

PEM fuel cell durability and reliability

Project Description: This project is to understand the reliability and durability of hydrogen powered PEM fuel cells.  The project involves extensive testing of two fuel cells under a broad variety of environmental conditions.  Hydrogen is viewed as a possible alternative to fossil fuels.

Photovoltaic module and system evaluations

Project Description: This project is an ongoing evaluation of the 10 kW PV system installed in 2005 on the roof of the engineering building high-bay, as well as an evaluation of several modules used in the Alternative Energy lab in the college of engineering. Photovoltaic systems are viewed as possible long-term alternatives to fossil fuel energy sources.

Removal of Stormwater Nutrients in Pervious Concrete Pavement Systems

Project Description: Current research is focused on improving water quality in stormwater runoff using pervious concrete pavement systems (PCPS). The study will determine the environmental properties, that is, the removal of nutrients from stormwater in pervious concrete containing wollastonite as a supplementary material in its mixture; and the effect that this material has in the hydrological performance of the system. Pervious concrete mixtures containing different proportions of wollastonite will be proportioned and the removal of nutrients, namely phosphorous and nitrogen, will be determined considering variables of contact time of water and concrete and drain cycles for long-term effectiveness. The proposed study will provide the foundations to use PCPS to control not only the quantity of stormwater runoff that can be generated in a given urban area but also provide the initial water treatment by collecting total suspended solids and nutrients.
