Tips For Success from...

Academic Achievement Center

Why sit in your car between classes?  Let the AAC be your base of operations.  The AAC is a complete study venue, where you can meet with classmates or review by yourself in a quiet location. There are carrels, private study rooms, two large group study rooms, a copier, a scanner, computers, and web cams available for student use.  We sell blue books and scantrons.  Tutors are also available to answer quick questions or provide more in depth assistance in eight subject areas.

Commuters often worry about not having the time to study for classes, but they have more time than they think!  Use time between classes to review notes from previous classes; use commuting time to listen to literature on tape, and use lunch times to read and review.

Make sure you manage your time by noting all the work due, quizzes, and exams in your classes in your planner.  Try to plan at least two weeks in advance to make sure you have some “slip time” in case things don’t go just right!

Got writer’s block?  Improve your ability to generate, develop and organize your ideas in an essay and gain confidence in your writing skills.  Drop in for weekly writing practice sessions: Wednesdays from 12:30 – 1:30 PM and Thursdays from 4:30 – 5:30 PM in Café Lawrence.

If your commuting schedule stops you from being able to attend weekly writing practice or a Writing Proficiency Exam Prep Session, don’t stress out.  Stop by the AAC (C201) and pick up a Writing Proficiency Exam self-study packet today.

If you get frustrated starting essays or developing your ideas in an essay, consider meeting with a writing tutor for a 30-minute essay development session.  Writing tutors are available Monday – Friday in the morning, afternoon and evening times.

Sports and Recreation

Stretch your legs and work your muscles after sitting in your car!  Commuter Students can still find time to work out for free at the Field House.  Stop by before classes, between classes, or after classes.  Join a class, league, or intramural sport.  The Field House has extended hours specifically to meet the needs of Commuter Students:

Extended Field House Hours
Mondays 6:30am-10:00pm
Tuesday 8:00am-11:00pm
Wednesday 6:30am-11:00pm
Thursday 8:00am-11:00pm
Friday 6:30am-9:00pm

As Commuter students, you obviously spend a great deal of time in your car. Instead of always wasting commuting time, turn it into a learning and review time. Your car can make a great “university on wheels.” Listen to and review lectures you may have on tape, CD, or mp3. Record and play review questions for an upcoming test, or listen to motivational or spiritual recordings to get you in the best mindset for learning. Either way, if you are commuting just 20 minutes to school three days per week, that’s an extra 2 hours of study or review time each week. Save yourself the stress of becoming overwhelmed and overworked. Don’t let your commuting time go to waste!
