Where can I recycle on campus?
Recycling is available anywhere where there is a blue or green labeled recycling bin. In University Housing, each room has its own recycling bin that has a label describing common items in residence halls that can be recycled.

Can disposable (plastic or paper) cups, napkins, plates, etc. be recycled?
Unfortunately, at this time, these materials cannot be recycled. Paper or plastic plates, cups, or utensils, as well as napkins, cannot be recycled because they come into contact with food, and this can provide sanitary concerns .

Do I need to remove staples or paper clips from papers?
Current technology makes recycling extremely easy! When recycling first started, separating the steel from the paper was a common requirement, but now, staples or paper clips are removed at the recycling plant using magnets and then recycled separately. This process occurs automatically, so there is no need to take out each individual staple or paper clip.

How many times can a single piece of paper be recycled?
An individual sheet of paper can be reused more than 8 times before its pulp cannot be reused in recycled paper!

Where do materials go after being placed in the appropriate receptacle?
On-campus materials are all sorted in the Recycling Room of the Taubman Building. After they are sorted, they are combined with the materials from Housing units. They are then all taken to a local Southeastern Michigan plant where they are sorted and sent off to plants for use in the creation of new products.

Why do I need to dump out liquids from containers before recycling?
Containers are crushed at the sorting facility, and if there is liquid in the container, it will create a large mess. Therefore, containers should be emptied to prevent this problem.
