|Opening reception for 'Mile 916' exhibition is March 3 at Studio Couture Detroit|
DETROIT – A new exhibition, “Mile 916: Painting and Photography from the Maine College of Art,” will be on display March 2-25 at Studio Couture Detroit, a multi-purpose arts incubator with a gallery, design studio, and community arts space located at 1433 Woodward in Detroit.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The opening reception will be on Saturday, March 3, 6-10 p.m.
The show is the product of a 916-mile road trip taken by eight students of the Maine College of Art (MECA). Studio Couture co-founder Blake Almstead is a 2007 MECA graduate and an adjunct faculty member of Lawrence Technological University, which provides funding for Studio Couture.
“As an alum of MECA, I couldn’t be more excited to bring Portland, Maine, to Detroit, Michigan. Detroit’s art scene has been rapidly growing and leading the nation in so many exciting ways. We can’t wait to be able to provide this opportunity to the students of MECA, an institution that shaped and guided me to where I am today,” Almstead said.
The exhibition, juried by Daniel Fuller, director of the Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA, includes the work of painters and photography majors Graham Almstead, Harlan Crichton, Susan Kanaga, Angela Rosensweig, Megan Reinhold, Reesa Wood, Gabriella Sturchio and Zak Taillon. View their work at www.meca.edu/galleries.
While here to assist with the installation of the exhibit and the opening, the eight Maine College of Art students will be hosted by students from the Department of Art and Design at Lawrence Tech.
The intent is to create a sustained dialogue and connection between the vibrant art scene in Detroit and the art scene in Portland, Maine, according to Almstead.
