Trudeau named WHAC athletic director of the year

After tabulating the votes of its 12 athletic directors, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) has named Lawrence Technological University’s Scott Trudeau as the 2013-14 Athletic Director of the Year. Trudeau takes home the award after completing his third year at the helm of LTU’s athletic program.

Trudeau’s 2013-14 campaign began with a bang – the announcement of four additional teams, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis. When those teams are introduced in the 2014-15 academic year, LTU will have 18 varsity teams.

With the addition of new teams comes the need to quickly line up new head coaches. Trudeau spearheaded a search that concluded with the hiring of Josh Heiple for golf and Steve Behmlander for tennis.

Facility upgrades were a top priority for LTU in 2013, and Trudeau managed the investment of more than $24,000 in display materials and added office space. Partnering with Fathead®, Lawrence Tech gave the Don Ridler Field House a facelift that strengthened LTU’s athletic brand for both student athletes and fans.

Assisting with the restructuring of the student-athlete study hour policy, Trudeau increased accessibility to LTU’s Academic Achievement Center and came up with a sliding scale for mandatory study hours that reflected each student athlete’s GPA. These changes resulted in an overall 3.1 GPA average for student athletes.

Under Trudeau’s watch, Lawrence Tech also won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Live 5 Challenge in competition with 50 NAIA institutions whose student-athletes completed the Learn to Live 5 character training. LTU’s $1,000 reward was donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southfield.

 “I am honored to be recognized by my peers in the WHAC conference in just my third year,” Trudeau said. “The award should really go to my great support staff. From the student staff to the university administration, we are all working together to make our program succeed.”
