The full SketchUp model of the building where the Third Place will be built is provided for students at www.ltu.edu/thirdplace. Just fill in the model with components, design the interior, and/ or create a floor plan that meets your needs. If that’s not your cup of tea, then create a menu or a name/branding mechanism instead!

Have you ever wanted to design a place in the City of Southfield that was tailored just for Lawrence Tech students? The Southfield City Centre and LTU Student Government are sponsoring a design competition to create a place near campus where the campus community can go to relax and socialize. The winning student or team of students will receive $2,000 and an iPad! The winner(s) also will be recognized on an engraved plaque outside of the building. Additionally, this is an incredible experience to show for a professional portfolio.

All currently enrolled Lawrence Tech undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of academic major, may enter this competition. Work may be submitted individually or in teams of no more than four members. There is no limit to the number of entries that a student or team may submit. For details, visit www.ltu.edu/thirdplace or emailstugov@ltu.edu!

Since 1955 LTU has had an important relationship with Southfield, a city of over 78,000 residents and a daytime population nearing 175,000. A more college-friendly atmosphere is being created within the City of Southfield, starting with the development of the Southfield City Centre.

Student leaders, public officials, and landowners have expressed interest in creating a “third place” within walking distance of campus. The “first place” is the home, the “second place” is the classroom, work, or studio, and the “third place” is a place where one can go to relax and socialize. It can be anything from a laundromat, restaurant, coffee shop, sandwich shop, to a bar. It would become the prime place for Lawrence Tech students, faculty, and alumni, as well as community members, to lounge.

The objectives of the competition are to:

1. Develop all interior aspects, including but not limited to, place(s) to serve food and drinks, furniture, televisions, and other interior decorations.
2. Design to incorporate a college atmosphere, specifically tailored toward LTU.
3. Provide a comfortable and welcome experience for students of all ages during all times of the day.
4. Develop a branding mechanism and provide a meaningful name for the business.
5. Create a menu of food items and drinks, with fair prices.

Submissions should include one or two printed 24” x 36” boards to be mounted in the Atrium. Please keep receipts so you can be reimbursed by Student Government. All boards must be turned in by 4 p.m., March 30, 2012, to the Office of the Dean of Students.

This is a rare opportunity to design an area capturing a sense of pride within your alma mater, and an opportunity to build the experiences for future generations of Lawrence Tech students.

We look forward to your submissions!
