DJ has worked in the field of philanthropy for the past nine years with the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. In the fall of 2008 he was selected as the Executive Director of the Community Foundation. He has been in that role since June 1, 2009. Prior to his appointment as the Executive Director, DJ was the Community Foundation's Program Officer for nine years. As Program Officer he oversaw the entire grantmaking and scholarship programs of the Community Foundation with total annual grants of roughly $700,000 in all program areas of arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services, and public/society benefit. He worked closely with the non-profit organizations in and around the Emmet County area of Michigan learning about their programs and needs and helping them obtain grant funding from the Community Foundation. He also handled many of the public relations and communication needs of the Community Foundation, including its website.
Prior to working for the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, DJ held positions at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. His most recent position at the World Bank was in the president's office. In the president's correspondence unit, he edited and drafted communications on behalf of the president and key advisors to a wide variety of national and international leaders. While in Washington, DC he was a member of Toastmasters International.
DJ has a B.A. degree in International Studies from the University of South Carolina and in 2007 he received his MBA from Lawrence Technological University. He was a member of the first Petoskey Cohort of the LTU MBA program in Petoskey.
In the field of philanthropy DJ has been active with the Council of Michigan Foundations, where he served as an advisor to the state-wide youth philanthropy board - a WK Kellogg Foundation initiative to get youth involved in philanthropy.
DJ has been and continues to be active in the Petoskey area. He is a member and past-president of the Kiwanis Club of Petoskey and currently serves on their board. He is currently serving a three-year term on the Vestry of his church, Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Petoskey. In 2001, he completed a nine-month leadership training program called Leadership Little Traverse and he is currently the co-chair of that group's steering committee. In 2000, he served a one-year term on the Readers Panel of the Petoskey News Review daily newspaper.
He lives in Petoskey, Michigan with his wife, Patricia, and their two daughters, Ellie and Annie.
