"People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously.
This is how character is built."

Paris Study Abroad Program

Paris, France
College of Architecture and Design
Study Abroad during the summer semester
Estimated costs: $4,200-$5,000 (does not include tuition)
(Includes airfare, hotel, breakfast, some dinners, museum passes, metro passes, all side excursions)

The Summer Abroad Program is intended to provide the opportunity to explore the architectural and urban fabric of the internationally renowned city, and to expose students to the rich history and culture of the Paris environment. The Paris Study Abroad Program is part of the Fall semester schedule. Students participate in the program as part of ARC 2303/ARC 5902-Study Abroad Europe. Prerequisites include ARC 3623-Hist. Design Envir or ARC 3643-Traditions of Art.

The Study Abroad Program is open to students of junior, senior or graduate standing. Students will explore Paris and late twentieth century architecture through an international architectural design studio and seminar. A Paris-based design project will be initiated in the studio and the seminar will seek to give an understanding of the history of architecture and planning, particularly the insertion of the Late 20th Century, contemporary architecture into the historical fabric. Design process explorations, on site studies, guides walking tours, lectures and discussions are part of the Study Abroad Program.

This is a life learning experience that cannot be duplicated through the normal class process on campus. Part of the total study abroad experience is diverse European travel possibilities during the month long stay in Paris. Here are some excerpts from student journals as part of their participation in the Paris Study Abroad Program.

Testimonials from LTU students:

"Pinch me - we're in France! We're in Paris. After we unpack and refresh Professor Chasco takes us on a walking tour of our new "neighborhood". We behold the monument at the Place de la Bastille - an important Revolutionary site. We cross the Seine to the Ile St Louis, walk a little more and we're crossing the Seine again to the Ile de la Cite. Hey! Look up! It's Notre Dame de Paris! It is an awesome sight. I don't use this term casually, but literally. As we continue to the west façade. I am indeed awe-struck.- This afternoon we toured Villa La Roche - Foundation le Courbusier. ..It was a treat to view and experience architecture that was cutting edge at the time it was designed and built. Afterwards we were treated with buildings by Hector Guimard - Castle Beringer - so ‘art nouveau'". - Wanda Diamond

"I returned to Paris for not even 30 hours before I was off to Switzerland. There was a town center where cars couldn't drive and walkways were lined with stores of all kinds. The small, peaceful town of Lousanne required a longer stay than I could afford... It was time to move on to Rome, Italy.... I am sitting in the Vatican museum. It is overwhelming how elaborate every element of the building is." - Carl Wixom
